Former Binghamton University women’s basketball standout Bess Greenberg has been named the New York state winner of the 2001 NCAA Woman of the Year Award and will now advance to the next round of balloting, the school learned today.
The NCAA Woman of the Year Award honors outstanding female student-athletes who have excelled in academics, athletics and community leadership.
Greenberg, who graduated in May after completing a stellar four-year basketball career, joins 50 other student-athletes representing each state and the District of Columbia. A committee composed of representatives from member schools selected the state winners, and that same committee will select 10 finalists, which will be announced by the NCAA on September 10. A national winner will be announced at the 2001 NCAA Woman of the Year dinner, October 21, at the Indiana Roof Ballroom in Indianapolis.
In her four-year collegiate career, Greenberg scored a school-record 2,024 points, and was a three-time Academic All-American and a two-time basketball All-American. She led Binghamton to a pair of NCAA tournament appearances, and closed out her career with back-to-back ECAC Championships. The team was a combined 97-16 in her four years (1997-2001).
Off the court, she was instrumental in dozens of clinics, speaking engagements, mentoring and tutoring programs and charity events in Broome County. She earned a bachelor’s degree in English, and graduated with a 3.75 grade-point average.
A total of 350 student-athletes were nominated for the award, which was first given out in 1991.
