Both the men’s and women’s tennis teams took third at the America East Championships, held April 26-28 at Yale. The men concluded their season with a 4-3 semifinal loss to eventual runner-up Stony Brook. Coach Michael Starke’s team finished its first Division I campaign 14-7 overall. The Stony Brook match was as close as it comes, with the Bearcats capturing the doubles point before succumbing to the No. 2 Seawolves in four of six singles matches. Five of those singles battles went a full three sets — but BU won just one — and suffered the team’s second 4-3 setback to Stony Brook in 16 days. Freshman sensation Akshay Rao (New Delhi, India) scored a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 1 singles, and junior all-conference player Brad Davidoff (Roslyn, N.Y.) rallied for a 3-6, 7-5, 6-4 win at the third spot. The Bearcats built considerable leads at fifth and sixth singles, but could not close out either match, and the Seawolves rallied for the team victory.
The women’s team won two of three matches at the tournament, and earned third place outright with a 6-0 victory over Vermont. Coached by Jamie Campbell, No. 3 seed BU opened play with a 4-1 win over No. 6 Hartford. In the semifinals, the Bearcats were defeated by No. 2 Stony Brook, 4-0. The third doubles tandem of Erin Monaco (Bayside, N.Y./Cardozo) and freshman Jen Sussman (Roslyn, N.Y.) won their match 8-5, but BU lost the doubles point and then lost the first three singles matches. A few hours later, Binghamton rebounded with a convincing 6-0 victory over Vermont to claim sole possession of third place. Freshman Grace Wu (Livingston, N.J.) posted a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 1 singles, sophomore Janine Sadaka (Great Neck, N.Y.) won her match at second singles, 6-1, 6-0, and junior Amy Weissberg (Syosset, N.Y.) was perfect in a 6-0, 6-0 triumph at the third spot. The women concluded their inaugural Division I season with an 12-11 record. | ||||
