Bearcats
defeat Vermont 6-1 for second consecutive victory
BURLINGTON,
Vt. - Freshmen Melis Altinay (Antalya, Turkey) and Lya
Kushnirovich (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and senior Janine Sadaka
(Great Neck, N.Y.) each won their singles and doubles matches,
leading Binghamton (2-10) to a 6-1 win over America East Conference
foe Vermont (3-11) on Friday afternoon in Burlington. The victory
was the Bearcats second in as many days.
"Our team played very well against Stony Brook yesterday
and we carried the momentum into our match today," head
coach Mike Stevens said. "It was a very good weekend for
us."
Altinay won her sixth consecutive match at first singles, defeating
Molly Moran of Vermont 6-2, 6-0. She also teamed with sophomore
Sherri Stern (Commack, N.Y.) to win at second doubles
8-3. Kushnirovich and Sadaka won 8-5 at first doubles. In singles
action, Kushnirovich won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 while Sadaka won 6-4,
6-4 at No. 3.
Also win their singles matches were freshman Vera Popova (Brooklyn,
N.Y.) at No. 4 and sophomore Laurel Freel (Mount Kisco,
N.Y.) at No. 6. Popova won 6-3, 6-0 while Freel won 6-2,
6-1.
Binghamton travels to Albany on Tuesday for a 3 p.m. match.
