Binghamton women's tennis team earned academic accolades from ITA

NEW HAVEN, Conn.-- Rising senior Lya Kushnirovich (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and rising junior Gararthri Balasundar (Syosset, N.Y.) have earned academic honors from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) for the 2005-06 school year. In addition, the entire women's tennis squad posted a combined GPA of 3.23 and earned the ITA's Team Academic Award.

The criteria for individual academic honors is at least a 3.5 GPA through two semesters. For the team award, the Bearcats met the minimum 3.2 GPA.

The Bearcats enjoyed as much success on the courts as they did in the classroom this year. Binghamton went 11-6 and was the runner up at the America East Tournament for the second consecutive year. In addition, the Bearcats had a program-best four entrees at the prestigious ITA East Regional last October.

"I am very proud of our team this season," head coach Mike Stevens said. "They have worked very hard both on and off the court and it is nice to see them getting recognized."
