BU women's soccer loses conference opener at New Hampshire 3-2 in 2OT

DURHAM, N.H.--Host New Hampshire (5-4-2, 1-0 America East) scored the game-winner 3:09 into the second overtime period to knock off Binghamton (6-2-1, 0-1 AE) in the women's soccer conference opener for each school Friday afternoon.

The Wildcats, picked to finish third in the pre-season poll (BU was selected eighth of 10), rallied from a 2-1 halftime deficit to remain unbeaten against the Bearcats in the all-time series (2-0-2).

"It's a very disappointing loss," head coach Jeff Leightman said. "We played a pretty good first half and controlled play. The game-tying goal wasn't a great goal and the winner was from far out on an angle. It's just a shame because I thought we played well enough to win."

Senior forward Tatiana Mathelier (Pomona, N.Y.) scored two first-half goals in a five-minute span for Binghamton - each off a feed from freshman linemate Kim Povill (Massapequa, N.Y.). The two worked a give-and-go which resulted in the game's first goal at the 16:49 mark. New Hampshire returned the favor at 19:33, tying the score at 1-1. Just 2:11 later, however, Mathelier deposited a low shot into the corner to reclaim the lead for the Bearcats, who carried the 2-1 margin into halftime.

As time wound down in regulation, the Wildcats netted the equalizer on a 30-yard shot to the far post with just 7:03 left on the clock.

In overtime, New Hampshire held a 5-2 margin in shots, but Mathelier almost ended the contest with her third tally of the game, but the goal was called back on a hand ball. Then early in the second extra-session, the Wildcats attacked down the left wing and ended the affair with a 35-yard blast to the far post.

New Hampshire owned a 20-16 shot advantage.

The Bearcats continue their road trip with an 11a.m. contest Sunday at Maine.
