Immediate Release: September 29, 2005 VESTAL, N.Y. - Sophomore midfielder Kim Povill (Massapequa, N.Y.) broke a scoreless tie in the 66th minute and junior midfielder Kelly Burnham (Endicott, N.Y.) added two goals in a 1:33 span late in the game to carry Binghamton (5-5-2, 1-1 America East) past Stony Brook (3-8-1, 0-2 AE) 3-0 in an America East women's soccer game Thursday afternoon from West Gym Field. The win snapped a five-game winless streak for the Bearcats, the defending conference champion. "I thought we played outstanding soccer today," head coach Jeff Leightman said. "I was very proud of the team. All the pieces are starting to come together. We moved the ball around nicely and finally finished our chances in the final third of the field. It was a great effort." Despite owning a commanding shot and possession advantage, BU was held off the scoreboard until Povill headed in a corner kick from senior midfielder Kelly Sanders (Ramsey, N.J.) at the 65:47 mark. It was Povill's first goal of the season and the marker snapped a team scoring drought that had stretched to more than seven hours of soccer spanning five games. After the goal, the Bearcats kept up the offensive pressure and Burnham capitalized on another corner kick at the 82:11 mark. Junior forward Danielle White (Haddon Township, N.J.) delivered the set piece and Burnham knocked it in from close range. Just 1:33 later, senior defender Meghan Taylor (Campbell Hall, N.Y.) sent a free kick into the box, and on the ensuing scramble, Burnham banged in another goal on her way down to the ground. The tallies were Burnham's team-high fourth and fifth of the season. Junior keeper Kristie Bowers (Rochester, N.Y.) was called on to make just one save as the Bearcats owned a 20-6 margin in shots. It was Bowers' fourth shutout of the season and lowered her goals against average to 0.97. Binghamton now hits the road for three straight away games, beginning with a Sunday contest at Albany. |
