Binghamton women's soccer clinches postseason berth with 1-0 win at Maine

ORONO, Maine - Junior forward Danielle White (Haddon Township, N.J.) scored the game's lone goal with 13 seconds left in the first half as visiting Binghamton (8-6-3, 4-2-1 America East) blanked Maine (9-5-1, 4-1-1 AE) 1-0 in a women's soccer game Sunday afternoon from Alumni Field. The win clinched a top-six position and subsequent playoff berth for the defending champions. The game was a rematch of last fall's America East Championship game, which Binghamton won 2-0 on its home field. The loss was Maine's first in six conference games this season and snapped a four-game Black Bears win streak.

"It was a very well played game by both teams," head coach Jeff Leightman said. "Our level of commitment was fantastic. I thought we did a great job of limiting them to outside chances. I'm really proud of our team. It was a high level America East game."

White scored the winner after a BU corner kick was knocked around near the Maine goalmouth. Sophomore defender Katie Kerrigan (Middletown, N.Y.) headed the ball back to the near post, where White banged home her team-high seventh goal of the season.

Maine held a 25-8 advantage in shots.

Junior keeper Kristie Bowers (Rochester, N.Y.) made 13 saves for her seventh shutout of the season.

Binghamton wraps up its regular season by hosting Hartford this Thursday at West Gym Field. The America East quarterfinals begin on October 28.
