Binghamton women's soccer remains unbeaten with 3-2 win at St. Bonaventure

OLEAN, N.Y.--Binghamton (2-0) bunched three second-half goals in a 16-minute span, and remained unbeaten with a 3-2 win over host St. Bonaventure (1-1), 3-2, Sunday afternoon. The Bearcats were outshot 12-8, but made the most of their offensive chances to secure the team's second straight one-goal win to open the 2004 season. It also was BU's third-straight win over the Atlantic 10 member Bonnies, dating back to the 2002 season.

Freshman forward Tricia Reed (Oswego, N.Y.) scored the game-winner in the 72nd minute, breaking a 2-2 tie with her first collegiate tally. Classmate Maria Krug (Norwich, Conn.) began the play with a strong attack down the left flank. Krug sent a ball into the middle, where freshman Kim Povill (Massapequa, N.Y.) flicked it on to a rushing Reed, who beat the keeper from the near post.

The Bearcats trailed 1-0 at the half but were being outplayed by St. Bonaventure early in the contest. Binghamton jumped back into the game with two goals in a 4:17 span early in the second half. Senior midfielder Deli Plourde (Clifton Park, N.Y.) evened the score at the 55:57 mark, running onto a deflected ball from senior striker Tatiana Mathelier (Pomona, N.Y.) and beating the keeper from 18 yards out. Mathelier helped set up the next goal as well, feeding Povill for her second collegiate goal in as many games.

The Bonnies tied the score in the 70th minute, setting the stage for Reed's game-winner.

"We're really fortunate to get out of here with a win," head coach Jeff Leightman said. "St. Bonaventure created a lot of opportunities and played very well. To score three goals in the second half is huge. That explosiveness has been lacking in the last few years, and is absolutely critical for our season to go well."

Sophomore keeper Kristie Bowers (Rochester, N.Y.) kept the home team at bay until her teammates could crank up the offense in the second half. She recorded three saves, including a pair of key stops in the opening period.

"Kristie played awesome," Leightman said. "We left her high and dry a few times and she came up big."

The Bearcats return to action one week from today with an away contest at Big East member St. John's.

Binghamton improved to 7-2 in one-goal games dating back to last season ... Senior co-captain Deli Plourde (Clifton Park, N.Y.) already has three points in two games after registering just one point in 18 games last season.
