VESTAL, N.Y. — The Binghamton wrestling team (0-4) lost a pair of matches in a tri-meet against Eastern Michigan and Boston University. The Bearcats lost to Eastern Michigan 22-16 and fell to Boston University 43-3. Boston University also defeated Eastern Michigan 21-16 in the evening’s other match.

Freshman heavyweight Jon Gregg (Johnsonville, N.Y.) was the lone double-winner for BU. In his first bout, he decisioned an Eastern Michigan oppoent 4-2. In the nightcap, Gregg decisioned his Boston opponent 11-5.

“Jon really did a great job tonight,” said BU head coach Mike Fusilli. “His opponent from Eastern Michigan is ranked third in the Mid American Conference and he really battled hard. These were two great wins for Jon.”

At 149, sophomore Joe Gartiser (Tuxedo, N.Y.) pinned his Eastern Michigan opponent at 6:50, and junior Jeff McAveney (New Fairfield, Conn.) scored a 10-2 major decision at 184. Binghamton’s other win was from sophomore Josh Ruff (Chester, N.Y.), 13-6 at 141.

“Our guys definitely showed improvement tonight,” Fusilli said. “Jeff McAveney had his best match of the year to date and overall I thought we mostly looked good. We knew that we would be outmatched against Boston. They are one of the stronger teams in the conference right now and it is a challenge for us to put five freshmen out there.”

The Bearcats return to action on Sunday when they compete at the Kent State Duals along with Gardner-Webb and Mercyhurst. The first bout is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
