| Binghamton wrestlers win one of three duals at Kent State |

KENT, OHIO Binghamton University (1-6) defeated Gardner-Webb 24-19 in its first match at the Kent State Duals, before losing a heartbreaker to Mercyhurst 24-23 and falling to Kent State 41-3. With matches beginning at the 149 weight class, Binghamton jumped out to a 15-0 lead against Gardner-Webb before hanging on for the five-point victory. Against Mercyhurst, BU held a 17-0 lead before Mercyhurst won five of the last six bouts to post a one-point win. Sophomore Ryan Jantzen (Shoreham, N.Y.) was a triple-winner at 165 for the Bearcats, scoring a pair of pins and an overtime decision to improve his career record in duals to 10-8. Jantzen pinned his Gardner-Webb opponent in just 1:38, and then pinned an opponent from Mercyhurst in 4:46. Against his foe from Kent State, Jantzen went into an extra period to score a 5-3 win. At 149, Joe Gartiser (Tuxedo, N.Y.) recorded a pin at 4:45 against Gardner-Webb and scored a 5-2 decision against Mercyhurst. At 157, sophomore Rob Sckalor (Chester, N.Y.) tallied a 7-4 decision against Gardner-Webb and recorded an 18-3 technical fall over his opponent from Mercyhurst. Scoring
single wins for Binghamton were Jeff McAveney (New Fairfield,
Conn.), 4-2 at 184 against Gardner-Webb, Derman Lewis (Schenectady,
N.Y.) 3-1 at 197 against Gardner-Webb, Mike Shannon (Albany,
N.Y.) 6-3 at 133 against Gardner-Webb, and Jeff Vitale (Sea Cliff,
N.Y.) 10-8 at 174 against Mercyhurst. |
