Immediate Release: November 15, 2003 Contact: David Berman (berman@binghamton.edu) Phone: 607-777-2956 Bearcats open season at Empire State Open CORTLAND, N.Y.--Members of the Binghamton wrestling squad opened the 2003-2004 schedule by competing in the non-scoring Empire State Open on Saturday at Cortland. Senior Justin Hoch (Canandaigua, N.Y.) and freshman Andy Scolaro (Cooper Plains, N.Y.) each recorded a pair of wins to lead the Bearcats. Wrestling at 157, Hoch opened up the tournament with a 10-1 major decision over an opponent from Army, and then went on to secure a pin in 5:33 against a Boston University foe. However, with the field narrowed to eight wrestlers, he was defeated 11-5 by the #2 seed from Cornell and was eventually eliminated by a Drexel opponent 11-8 in the consolation bracket. Scolaro, wrestling at 165, began his collegiate career by pinning his Cortland opponent in 3:17. He then secured a 4-2 decision over an unattached wrestler before being defeated 18-8 by the #2 seed from Boston University. Scolaro was eventually defeated 9-3 in the consolation bracket.
