Binghamton women's lacrosse falls 21-7 on the road at Vermont

Burlington, Vt.--Junior Becky Kenison and freshman Kristen Millar both recorded a game-high eight points to lead the host Catamounts to a 21-7 victory over Binghamton in an America East conference matchup on Saturday afternoon at Moulton Windor Field. With the victory, Vermont brings its recent seven game losing skid to a halt (6-8, 1-4 AE) and hands the Bearcats (4-11, 0-5 AE) their fourth consecutive defeat.

Junior attack Heather Grose (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) gave Binghamton an early 1-0 advantage, touching the net on an unassisted effort just 1:06 into the contest. Vermont, however, would respond emphatically with a 5-0 surge spearheaded by three of Kenison's team-best seven tallies.

Binghamton stemmed the run with a goal from sophomore midfielder Leanne Musso (Auburn, N.Y.) at the 18:00 mark, but once again the Catamounts answered, as this time Millar struck, registering a goal and an assist on back-to-back Vermont scores to stretch the lead to 7-2 with 14:03 to play in the half. On the afternoon, the Catamount freshman finished with four goals and four assists.

Binghamton would receive a goal each from Danielle Edwards (Horseheads, N.Y.), Julia Demuth (Jordan, N.Y.) and Lauren Chemotti (Skaneateles, N.Y.) before halftime to cut the deficit by one, as the Bearcats trailed by a 9-5 margin after 30 minutes of action.

The second half of play saw Vermont strike early and often, as the Catamounts used an early 4-0 run to capture the contest's momentum and put the game out of reach.

Senior Lauren Wetherell (Bethpage, N.Y.) netted a pair of back-to-back second half goals to wrap up the scoring for the Bearcats. Wetherell also add her team-leading 24th assist.

Bearcat netminder Sandra Alvarez (Port Washington, N.Y.) stopped 10 Vermont efforts before giving way to freshman Carolyn Cuneo (East Northport, N.Y.), who manned the crease for the final 14:42 and finished with two saves to her credit.

Vermont outshot the Bearcats by a 39-15 margin and won nearly 70% (16-of-23) of the game's draw controls.

Binghamton returns to action on Tuesday, April 25 when they take on the Northeast Conference's Quinnipiac University. Game time is set for 2 p.m.

Notes: Binghamton is now 1-4 all-time against Vermont and finishes the 2006 campaign with a 1-9 mark on the road...Lauren Chemotti's first half score was the Bearcat midfielder's first of the season...After having a season-best eight-game scoring streak snapped last week against UNH, Julia Demuth got back on the scoresheet with her 15th goal of the season. She has now scored in nine of the last 10.
