Binghamton women's lacrosse falls at Canisius 16-8

BUFFALO, N.Y.--Sophomore attack Whitney Card and freshman midfielder Ashley Gray each tied a school record with six goals as Canisius College defeated Binghamton 16-8 in a non-conference women's lacrosse game Sunday afternoon at the Demske Sports Complex.

The host Golden Griffins (5-2) jumped out to an early 1-0 lead before junior midfielder Anna Riordan (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) put the Bearcats (2-4) on the board with an unassisted tally just two minutes into the contest.

From there on out, it was all Canisius, as Gray and Card combined for seven scores spearheading an impressive 9-1 surge to give the Griffins a commanding 10-2 edge after 30 minutes of action.

Binghamton's struggles continued in the second half, as Canisius burst out of the gate scoring five of the first six goals of the stanza to grab a 15-3 lead with less than 10 minutes remaining in the contest. The Bearcats, however, would end the afternoon on a positive note as they registered five of the contest's final six tallies.

Sophomore midfielder Kristen Marsjanik (Webster, N.Y.) led all Binghamton scorers with two goals and an assist, while Riordan and senior Lauren Wetherell (Bethpage, N.Y.) each netted a pair of scores for the Bearcats. Wetherell, fresh off of Wednesday's five-assist performance against American University, also added a game-high seven ground balls.

Freshmen Lindsay Feller (Mahopac, N.Y.) and Julia Demuth (Jordan, N.Y.) also scored for Binghamton.

Sophomore Sandra Alvarez (Port Washington, N.Y.) had 15 saves between the pipes for the Bearcats who were outshot by a 42-24 margin on the afternoon.

Binghamton returns to action on Tuesday afternoon with a 4 p.m. contest at Long Island University.
