BU women's basketball to open 2006-07 season at home against Sacred Heart on Nov. 13

VESTAL, N.Y.-- The Binghamton athletic department has released the 2006-07 women's basketball non-conference schedule, which opens up at home on Nov. 13 against defending Northeast Champion Sacred Heart at 7 p.m. The Pioneers, who went 26-5 last year, were defeated in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament by eventual champion Maryland.

"We are very excited to be opening up against Sacred Heart," head coach Rich Conover said. "They are an outstanding team and it should be a great game for our region.

Two other first-time opponents who will visit the Events Center are Liberty (Nov. 25) and Villanova (Dec. 10). The Flames won the Big South Conference title last season while the Wildcats advanced to the WNIT quarterfinals.

On the road, the Bearcats head down to the Florida Atlantic Tip-off Classic Nov. 18-19 for games against Akron and Winthrop. Both games begin at 5 p.m.

Binghamton has a critical three-game road stretch against La Salle (Nov. 29), Canisius (Dec. 2) and Lehigh (Dec. 7), three opponents which it defeated at the Events Center last season.

The Bearcats’ biggest non-conference win on the road last season was a 74-52 win at Syracuse on Dec. 18. This season, the Orangewomen visit the Events Center on Dec. 30.

“We have put together another tough non-conference schedule which will prepare us for the America East Conference schedule,” Conover said. “We are especially excited to have home games against three teams who made it to the post season last year. We beat some very good teams last year but its going to be a challenge to do it twice in a row.”

The America East Conference schedule will be released later this month.
