Binghamton volleyball sweeps Stony Brook, remains tied for first in America East
Bearcats take sole possession of first place

VESTAL, N.Y.-- Binghamton junior outside hitter Katie Brody (Vestal, N.Y.) nailed a match-high 15 kills, leading Binghamton (17-10, 9-1 AE) to a 30-13, 30-22, 32-30 win over Stony Brook (9-16, 3-6 AE) in an America East Conference volleyball match on Friday night at West Gym. The victory is the third straight for the Bearcats who remain tied for first in the America East with two regular season matches remaining.

Brody was the only Binghamton player to post double figures in kills. Sophomore middle blocker Jacki Kane (Centennial, Colo.) added nine kills and three total blocks while freshman outside hitter Brianna Strong (Elkhart, Ind.) posted eight kills and a team-high 10 digs. Junior setter Ashley Meffert (Louisville, Ky.) tallied 26 assists and recorded three total blocks.

"We came out strong the first two games," head coach Glenn Kiriyama said. "We were blocking and hitting well. We struggled a bit more in the third game but I'm glad we were able to bounce back and win that final game."

For Stony Brook, Amy Oleksiej had a team-high 11 kills and Kate Rushkowski posted a match-high 33 kills.

The Bearcats broke open a 5-5 tie in the opening game and went on a 25-8 run to take a 1-0 lead. It was a similar story in the second game, as Binghamton broke open an 8-8 deadlock and went on a 22-14 run to take a commanding 2-0 lead.

Stony Brook hung tough and held a 29-26 advantage in the thrid game. Binghamton, however, fought off three game points to tie the score at 29-29. After squandering a match point, the Bearcats got a second chance and finished up with a 32-20 win.

Binghamton travels to Maine on Sunday for a noon match.
