coming through for Binghamton was sophomore outside hitter Jennifer
Smith (North Tonawanda, N.Y.), who had a team-high 15 kills
and a match-high 20 digs, and sophomore Michele Smith (Chicago,
Ill./ Resurrection), who added 12 kills and 11 digs. Maine jumped to a 13-8 lead in the first game when the Bearcats came back to tie at 14-14. The Black Bears took the lead again to 25-21 when the Bearcats came back to tie 25-25. The game was even until 27-27 when UMaine scored three straight points off kills. Binghamton dominated game two, jumping out to a 6-1 lead. The Black Bears would come as close as 14-12, but Binghamton outscored UMaine 16-4 to finish the game. In game three, UMaine again fell to a 6-1 deficit, but rallied to a 14-11 lead. Binghamton scored six straight points to regain the lead, 17-14, and the Black Bears could not overcome the three-point deficit. Game four featured seven ties as the two teams battled for the lead. The Black Bears fell to as much as 22-14, but came back to tie at 23-23. UMaine could not gain another lead Binghamton, the blocking leader in the America East, tallied 20 block assists and three block solos.
