For Immediate Release: May 6, 2006 Contact: David O'Brian (dobrian@binghamton.edu) Phone: 607-777-6478 Binghamton softball sweeps doubleheader from Vermont 2-0 and 7-6 Game 1 Box Score Game 2 Box Score VESTAL, N.Y.-- Senior pitcher Katie Hansen (Westtown, N.Y.) tossed a four-hit shutout in the opener and senior shortstop Rose Barre (Watertown, N.Y.) went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI in the second game, leading Binghamton (14-32, 7-13 AE) to a doubleheader sweep over Vermont (15-26, 6-14 AE) in America East Conference softball action on Saturday at the East Gym Complex. The Bearcats won the first game 2-0 and overcame a six-run deficit to win the nightcap 7-6. "Katie pitched very well in the first game and it was nice to get those runs behind her," head coach Holly Brown said. "We kept fighting and battling in the second game and we knew at some point, Rose was going to break through with a big hit." Hansen, who now has three complete-game shutouts this season, struck out a career-high 10 batters and issued just two walks. Senior second baseman Nicole Vitello (Olean, N.Y.) scored both of the Bearcat runs in the first game. She scored on a sacrifice fly by junior catcher Christina Quijano (Syracuse, N.Y.) in the second inning and drilled a solo home run in the fourth inning. In the second game, Vermont jumped out to a 6-0 lead by the middle of the fourth inning. Freshman pitcher Alison Daggett hit a solo home run in the top of the first inning and junior first baseman Kate Ramsey keyed a four-run second inning with a two-run single. The Catamounts added their final run on a Binghamton error in the top of the fourth inning. Freshman pitcher Jessica Whitaker (Salinas, Calif.) started the Bearcats' comeback with a RBI single in the bottom of the fourth inning, cut the deficit to 6-1. Senior Lauren Verrusio (New Rochelle, N.Y.) singled and advanced to second on an error to lead off the fifth inning. She stole third on a wild pitch and scored on a passed ball, making the score 6-2. Later in the fifth inning, Barre had a RBI single and scored on a double by Vitello, pulling the Bearcats to within 6-4. Junior catcher Mia Bieman (Wingham, Ontario) followed with a RBI triple for the final run of the inning. In the pitvotal bottom of the sixth inning, junior Emilie Palmcrantz (Leksand, Sweden) singled in the tying run and advanced to second on the play. That set the stage for Barre, who singled home Palmcrantz with what proved to be the game-winning run. Binghamton and Vermont conclude their seasons on Sunday with a single game at noon.
