Immediate Release: April 26, 2006 Contact: David O'Brian (dobrian@binghamton.edu) Phone: 607-777-6478 Binghamton softball wins 6-1 at UMBC Box Score BALTIMORE, MD.-- Sophomore outfielder Devin Glezen (Hallstead, Pa.) scored three runs and senior shortstop Rose Barre (Watertown, N.Y.) had two RBI, leading Binghamton (11-28, 4-11 AE) to a 6-1 win at UMBC (41-14, 9-6 AE) in an America East Conference softball game on Wednesday. The victory is the Bearcats' fifth in their last seven outings. On the mound, senior pitcher Katie Hansen (Westtown, N.Y.) allowed just one run on two hits and struck out seven batters. She had a no-hitter going into the fifth inning. "Our defense played well today and we gave Katie good run support," head coach Holly Brown said. "Devin and Rose had a great day offensively." Glezen drilled a solo home run in the top of the first inning over the right-center field fence to put the Bearcats up 1-0. It was her team-best fifth homer of the season. One inning later, senior outfielder Lauren Verrusio (New Rochelle, N.Y.) singled home junior catcher Christine Quijano (Syracuse, N.Y.) to make it 2-0. Glezen and Barre each scored a run in the fourth inning as the Bearcats went up 4-0. UMBC, however, got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the inning on a RBI single by shortstop Dana Shepherd. In the top of the sixth inning, Barre doubled home Glezen and Verrusio to pad the lead to 6-1. From there, Hansen retired the final six UMBC batters she faced. Binghamton heads to Maine for a three-game series this weekend. |
