For Immediate Release: April 12, 2006 Contact: David O'Brian (dobrian@binghamton.edu) Phone: 607-777-6478 Binghamton softball swept by UMBC in America East doubleheader Photos| Game 1 Box Score Game 2 Box Score VESTAL, N.Y.-- Junior first baseman Melanie Denischuk homered twice and sophomore second baseman Stevie Shore belted a grand slam, powering UMBC (35-11, 5-3 AE) to a sweep over Binghamton (5-23, 1-7 AE) in an America East Conference doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon at the East Gym Complex. The Retreivers won the first game 7-3 and the nightcap 10-1. "We have to start scoring runs," head coach Holly Brown said. "They (UMBC) hit the ball well but we need to do the same." Denischuk hit both her home runs in the first game, giving her a conference-best 21 homers for the season. She hit a solo blast over the left field fence in the top of the first inning, giving UMBC a 1-0 lead. Junior catcher Christine Quijano (Syracuse, N.Y.) tied the score at 1-1 in the bottom of the second with her first home run of the year. In the top of the fourth inning, senior designated hitter Jessica Griffith homered, as UMBC reclaimed a one-run lead. Sophomore center fielder Kali Shirk added an RBI single later in the inning to extend the lead to 3-1. In the bottom of the fourth inning, however, senior shotstop Rose Barre scored stole home to cut the deficit to 3-2. Two innings later, Denischuk struck again, delivering a two-run blast to make the score 5-2. Freshman left fielder Courtney O'Hara drilled a two-run double in the top of the seventh inning to pad the lead to 7-2. Barre, who went 2-for-3 in the first game, drove in a run in the bottom of the seventh inning but that's as close as the Bearcats would get in the opener. Freshman designated hitter Sandy Meadows (Huachuca City, Ariz) went 2-for-2 in the first game. Shore drilled her grand slam with two outs in the first inning of the second game, giving UMBC a quick 4-0 edge. The Retreivers added three more runs before the end of the frame. The Bearcats lone run came in the bottom of the second inning, when junior Emilie Palmcrantz (Leksand, Sweden) scored on a RBI groundout by senior second baseman Nicole Vitello (Olean, N.Y.). UMBC took advantage of two Bearcat errors in the top of the fourth inning to extend the lead to 10-1. From there, freshman pitcher Krista Kearns pitched two shutout innings to finish the game in five innings. Binghamton hosts Hartford in a doubleheader on Friday at 1 p.m. The two squads conclude their weekend series with a single game on Saturday at noon.
