For Immediate Release: April 8, 2006 Contact: David O'Brian (dobrian@binghamton.edu) Phone: 607-777-6478 Binghamton softball drops home conference game to Stony Brook 7-5 Box Score Photos VESTAL, N.Y.-- Junior first baseman Samantha Posey and freshman third baseman Kelly Oberto each drove in two runs, powering Stony Brook (16-16, 2-2 AE) to a 7-5 win over Binghamton (4-20, 0-4 AE) in an America East Conference softball game at the East Gym Complex on Saturday afternoon. It was an offensive slugfest in which the two squads combined for 12 runs on 13 hits. "We got the bats going today," head coach Holly Brown said. "But they (Stony Brook) definitely got some big hits on outside pitches." The Seawolves jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Senior designated hitter Hayley Durham had a RBI single later scored on a fielder's choice. Oberto drew a bases-loaded walk for the final run of the frame. In the bottom of the second inning, however, the Bearcats exploded for four runs. Senior second baseman Nicole Vitello (Olean, N.Y.) led off with a double and later scored on a fielder's choice. Freshman left fielder Amanda Mills (Kirkwood, N.Y.) drew a bases-loaded walk and junior first baseman Emilie Palmcrantz (Leksand, Sweden) tied the game at 3-3 on a RBI single. Sophomore Devin Glezen (Hallstead, Pa.), who went 2-for-4 on the day, put the Bearcats up 4-3 on a RBI ground out. After a pair of scoreless innings, Stony Brook came up with four big runs in the top of the fifth inning. The big blow came courtesy of Posey, who broke a 4-4 tie with a two-run double to right field. She scored one batter later on a double by Oberto. Glezen led off the bottom of the fifth inning with a double and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Vitello. The Bearcats, however, could only muster one more hit over the final two innings. Binghamton and Stony Brook conclude the series with a Sunday doubleheader starting at noon.
