Immediate Release: March 17, 2006 Contact: David O'Brian (dobrian@binghamton.edu) Phone: 607-777-6478 Binghamton softball gains split in Day Four of Rebel Spring Games Box Score: Binghamton vs. Dayton Box Score: Binghamton vs. Rider ORLANDO, FLA. -- Freshman pitcher Jessica Whitaker (Salinas, Calif.). earned her first complete-game victory, leading Binghamton (3-10) to a split in its fourth day at the Rebel Spring Games in Orlando. She led the Bearcats to a 5-3 win over Dayton (6-10) before Rider (5-7) took a 2-1 decision in the nightcap. "Our pitching was very good today," head coach Holly Brown said. "We are continuing to improve as the week goes on. We came up with runs when we needed them against Dayton and played better defensively in both games." Whitaker scattered three runs on eight hits and struck out four batters. She got the bulk of her run support from junior first baseman Emilie Palmcrantz (Johnson City, N.Y.), who went 2-for-4 with two runs and a pair of RBI, and senior right fielder Lauren Verrusio (New Rochelle, N.Y.) who went 3-for-3 and scored twice. It was Palmcrantz who drilled a two-run double in the top of the fourth inning to break up a 2-2 deadlock and give Binghamton the lead for good. Later in the day, Heather Bienta of Rider held the Bearcats to one run on four hits and struck out six batters. Still, Binghamton grabbed a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning on a RBI single from junior Stephanie Woodcock (Harpursville, N.Y.). Rider, however, scored both of their runs in the top of the sixth inning. Right fielder Mandi Seikly drove home what proved to be the game-winner on a two-out single. Binghamton faces Wagner at 8:50 a.m. and Rhode Island at 10:40 a.m. on Saturday as they conclude their week stay in Orlando. NOTE: Senior shortstop Rose Barre (Watertown, N.Y.) had her career-high 11-game hit streak snapped against Dayton. She bounced back and went 2-for-3 against Rider. |
