Immediate Release: March 13, 2006 Contact: David O'Brian (dobrian@binghamton.edu) Phone: 607-777-6478 Binghamton softball swept by George Washington and Butler in Day One at Rebel Spring Games Box Score: George Washington 6, Binghamton 1 Box Score: Butler 9, Binghamton 6 ORLANDO, FLA. -- The Binghamton softball team (1-6) ran up against some stiff competition in the opening day of the Rebel Spring Games. The Bearcats lost the first game to George Washington (15-8) 6-1 and the concluding contest to Butler (7-7-1) 9-6. "We are continuing to improve," head coach Holly Brown said. "In each game, it was one inning in the field that was the difference. We got our offense going in the second game which was nice to see." The offensive leader for Binghamton was senior shortstop Rose Barre (Watertown, N.Y.), who went 3-for-6 on the day with two runs and a RBI. She has now hit safely in all seven of the team's games and is hitting .429 for the season. In the opening game, sophomore pitcher Jen Hrycyna surrendered just one run on three hits and struck out four batters, leading the Colonials to the win. The Bearcats struggled in the field as four of the six runs they allowed were unearned, including all four runs in the top of the first inning. The bats came alive in the second game for Binghamton, as the Bearcats bounced back from a 6-0 deficit by plating four runs in the top of the fourth inning. Barre led off with a triple and scored on double by senior second baseman Nicole Vitello (Olean, N.Y.). Later in the inning, junior catcher Mia Bieman (Wingham, Ontario) drove home a pair of runs on a double and senior left fielder Lauren Verusio (New Rochelle, N.Y.) had a RBI single. Butler, however, scored a run in each of the last three innings to protect its advantage. The closest Binghamton would come was 7-5 when Barre doubled home sophomore left fielder Devin Glezen (Hallstead, Pa.) in the top of the fifth inning. The Bulldogs were paced by freshman third baseman Alex Boros, who went 3-for-4 with two runs and three RBI and first baseman sophomore Amy Hyerczyk, who went 2-for-3 with a run and 3 RBI and Binghamton faces Columbia at 12:30 p.m. and Lafayette at 4:10 p.m. on Tuesday as play continues in Orlando. |
