Immediate Release: April 10, 2004 Contact: David O'Brian (dobrian@binghamton.edu) Phone: 607-777-6478 Softball defeats Maine 5-1 Box score ORONO, Maine.---Senior catcher Jessica Chellis (Tunkhannock, Pa./ Tunkhannock) belted a two-run home run and sophomore pitcher Katie Hansen (Westtown, N.Y./ Minisink Valley) allowed one run on six hits, leading Binghamton (10-11,1, 3-2 AE) to a 5-1 win over Maine (15-14, 3-3 AE) in an America East Conference contest on Saturday afternoon in Orono. With the win, the Bearcats have now won three of their last five conference games. With Maine leading 1-0 in the top of the third inning, Chellis belted a two-run home run to give Binghamton the lead for good. It was her second home run of the season. In the third inning, the Bearcats added to the lead when senior outfielder Chrsitine Sweeney (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./ John Jay) stole home to make the score 3-1. In the fifth inning, RBI doubles by freshman third baseman Sara Eppolito (Manlius, N.Y./ Fayetteville-Manlius) and junior center fielder Jessica Dima (Staten Island, N.Y./ Port Richmond) stretched the lead to 5-1. As for Hansen, she went the full seven innings, struck out three batters and did not allow an earned run for the second game in a row. Her record for the season now stands at 6-6. Binghamton returns home for a Wednesday doubleheader against UMBC at 3 p.m. |
