For Immediate Release: April 29, 2006 Contact: David O'Brian (dobrian@binghamton.edu) Phone: 607-777-6478 Binghamton softball has doubleheader at UMBC Game 1 Box Score Game 2 Box Score ORONO, MAINE- Senior pitcher Sara Bennis fired a two-hit shutout in the first game and senior outfielder Molly McKinney went 2-for-3 with 2 runs and a pair of RBI in the nightcap, leading Maine (33-15, 14-3 AE) to a doubleheader sweep over Binghamton (11-30, 4-13 AE) in an America East softball doubleheader on afternoon at Kessock Field. The Black Bears, who lead the conference, won the opener 1-0 and the finale 5-3. Bennis struck out out nine batters though seven innings and did not issue a walk. Binghamton senior Katie Hansen (Westtown, N.Y.) matched Bennis through four innings until junior third baseman Tara Vilardo had a RBI single in the bottom of the fifth inning. Hansen retired the next five batters but the Bearcats were unable to come up with the equalizer. Sophomore third baseman Megan Quinn (Temecula, Calif) broke open a scoreless tie in the second game, with a three-run home run in the top of the fourth inning. In the bottom of the frame, McKinney drove home a run and later scored on a sacrifice bunt, trimming the Bearcat lead to 3-2. One later, McKinney was the focal point of a three-run inning that put the Black Bears ahead for good. She doubled in the go-ahead run and scored the final run one batter later. Senior second baseman Nicole Vitello (Olean, N.Y.) and freshman left fielder Sandy Meadows (Huachuca City, Ariz) led off the top of the sixth inning with singles but the Bearcats left two runners on base without scoring a run. The last six Binghamton batters of the game were retired in order. Binghamton and Maine conclude their three-game series with a 2 p.m. matchup on Sunday.
