For Immediate Release: April 18, 2006 Contact: David O'Brian (dobrian@binghamton.edu) Phone: 607-777-6478 Binghamton softball sweeps doubleheader from Army 6-1 and 5-3 Photos Game 1 Box Score Game 2 Box Score VESTAL, N.Y.-- Senior pitcher Katie Hansen (Westtown, N.Y.) and freshman pitcher Jessica Whitaker (Salinas, Calif.) each tossed a complete-game victory, leading Binghamton (9-26) to a doubleheader sweep of Army (11-31) in a non-conference doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon at the East Gym Complex. The Bearcats, who have now won their last three contests, won the opener 6-1 and the nightcap 5-3. "Our defense and pitching worked really well today," head coach Holly Brown said. "It's was nice to see everyone playing very consistent and staying within themselves." In the first game, Hansen scattered one run on five hits and struck out six batters to win her second straight outing. She did not issue a walk. Offensively, freshman Sandy Meadows (Huachua City, Ariz.) went 2-for-3 and scored twice while sophomore third baseman Megan Quinn (Temecula, Calif.) was 2-for-3 with a RBI. Meadows scored on a sacrifice fly by junior catcher Christine Quijano (Syracuse, N.Y.) in the bottom of the second inning to put Binghamton up 1-0. The Bearcats added a run in the third inning but freshman outfielder Sarah Yates homered in the top of the fifth inning, closing the gap to 2-1. Binghamton took advantage of two Black Knight errors and scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Quinn finished the scoring with a RBI single one inning later. Whitaker, meanwhile, helped her own cause in the second game with a game-high two RBI. Senior shortstop Rose Barre (Watertown, N.Y.) went 2-for-4 with a RBI while Meadows went 2-for-3 and twice. Junior catcher Mia Bieman (Wingham, Ontario) went 2-for-2. Barre, Meadows and Bieman eached doubled home a run in the bottom of the first inning, putting the Bearcats up 3-0. Army responded with a pair of runs in the top of the second inning, with the big blow coming on a solo home run by sophomore pitcher Kelly Trout. Whitaker gave Binghamton breathing room in the bottom of the fifth inning with her two-run double. The Black Knights got a run back in the top of the seventh inning on a RBI double by junior shortstop Lindsey Gerheim, but left the tying run on second when the game ended. Binghamton travels to Boston for a three-game America East Conference series this weekend, starting with a noon doubleheader on Saturday.
