BOSTON,
Mass.--Freshman Kim Williams (Buffalo,
N.Y.), senior Luke
Shafer (Penfield, N.Y.) and graduate student Hasani
Hampden (Freeport, N.Y.) captured individual titles highlighting
the final day of 2006 America East Conference Championships on
Saturday afternoon at Boston University's Track and Tennis Center.
The men's team, with its pair of individual winners, finished
in fifth with a total of 86.5 points while the women's team,
which had one individual champion, tallied 71 points taking sixth
out of the nine-team field. Both the Albany and Boston University
held onto their Day One leads to capture the men' and women's
titles respectively. Boston's Robyn Jonhnson was named coach
of the year for the women, while UMBC’s David Bobb won the
award for the men.
Williams
punctuated a stellar freshman campaign capturing the 200 crown
clocking in with an IC4A-qualifying time of 24.78 while also
delivering a fourth place finish in the 55 hurdles (7.42).
For the second consecutive year, Hampden took the hepthathlon
crown, delivering a dominant performance which saw him amass
a total of 4,910 points, a whopping 222 more than his closest
competitor. His impressive meet continued with a second-place
finish in the 55 hurdles (7.72) and participation in the men's
4x400 relay team's (Hampden, Massar, Flucus and DePaola) fourth-place
finish.
Much like Hampden, Luke Shafer captured his second consecutive
America East individual championship, winning the high jump at
a height of 6-8. Teammates Adam
Goldberg (New Rochelle, N.Y.) and Chris
Iannone
also
found success in the high jump, finishing third and fifth respectively.
Other notable performances for the men included freshman and
Johnson City, N.Y., native Jimmy Massar
taking fifth in the 400 (49.05) as well as Binghmton's own Nick Tillman taking third in the
heptahlon (4536 points).
On the women's side, sophomores Dayna
Johnson (Brentwood, N.Y.) and Aja
Phipps (Mount Vernon, N.Y.) both captured fourth-place
finishes in the long jump and high jump respectively.
Freshman phenom Katie Radzik (Mt.
Sinai, N.Y.)set her second school-record in as many days, finishing
in eigth place with a time of 9:57.33 in the 3,000. Also, turning
in a strong performance for the Bearcat women was sophomore Keisha Short (Yaphank, N.Y.)who took
fourth in the 400 clocking in at 57.91.
