Bearcats defeat Rhode Island 5-2

ORLANDO, Fla. - Binghamton (9-8) won four of the six singles matches and captured the doubles point to defeat Rhode Island 5-2 Thursday in the team's final match of its spring break trip to Florida.

Sophomore Akshay Rao (New Delhi, India) scored a 6-2, 6-1 win at first singles after teaming with senior Brad Sherwood (Bronx, N.Y./Fordham Prep) for an 8-5 pro-set win at first doubles. Sherwood also won his match at fourth singles, 4-6, 7-5, 6-4. Freshman Edwin Gerard (Queens, N.Y./Edgemont) posted a 6-2, 6-1 victory at third singles.

"The guys who won played well," head coach Michael Starke said. "We didn't light the world on fire, but we picked up a win. I think we finally have new life in our doubles lineup."
