Bearcats blank Ithaca 7-0 in season opener

ITHACA, N.Y.--Visiting Binghamton (1-0) swept all six singles matches and the three doubles matches en route to a 7-0 victory over Ithaca (0-1) in the season opener for both teams. The Bearcats debuted a singles lineup that featured two newcomers, two returning starters, and two players moving into starting roles this season. All six spots in the lineup featured a different player than the lineup the team brought into last May's NCAA Tournament. Freshman Dan Hanegby (Herzeliya, Israel) played at the #1 spot and secured a 6-0, 6-1 win, while sophomore Edwin Gerard (Bayside, N.Y./Professional Children's School) scored a 6-1, 6-2 win at the second spot. Hanegby also teamed with senior Steve Spencer (Plantation, Fla./Nova) for an 8-1 win at first doubles.

Spencer and sophomore Richemn Mourad (Arujo, Brazil/Murray State) earned identical 6-0, 6-0 wins at third and fourth singles, respectively. Rounding out the singles lineup were junior Krishna Vallabhaneni (Lagrangeville, N.Y./Arlington) at the fifth spot and senior Rodrigo Valle (Queens, N.Y./Montessori Bilingcall, Bolivia) at the sixth spot. Both were 6-1, 6-1 winners. Vallabhaneni teamed with Gerard for an 8-0 win at second doubles, while Valle and Mourad squeezed out a 9-8 (2) decision at third doubles.
