Tennis standout Hanegby breaks into regional rankings

Binghamton University men's tennis freshman Dan Hanegby (Herzeliya, Israel) has earned a ranking of 19th in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) NCAA Division I Northeast Region poll. The rankings, based on the fall season, show the top 30 singles players and top 15 doubles teams from each of the eight regions across the country.

Hanegby went 12-2 in the abbreviated fall season, playing number one singles for head coach Michael Starke. He advanced to the round of 16 at the ITA East Regional, reached the semifinals at the Cornell Invitational, and posted a perfect 4-0 record in dual matches.

"This is a tremendous achievement for Dan," Starke said. "It is an accomplishment to gain a regional ranking, but to do this as a freshman is outstanding. Dan's ranking is well deserved, and reflective of a work ethic and competitive spirit of the highest nature. Already, Dan has exceeded my expectations, and he is only a freshman. What I find really exciting is Dan's best tennis is ahead of him. I am very happy for Dan and salute his efforts."

Hanegby is the highest ranked freshman in the region.

Ironically, he appears one spot above another stellar international player and Starke recruit - Akshay Rao, who transferred to Columbia after 1 1/2 years at Binghamton.

In the spring, Hanegby will have a chance to climb even higher in the rankings, with likely encounters against five players ranked in the top-20. Those players are No. 4 Josef Novotny (UMBC), No. 9 Reed Hagmann (Colgate), No. 13 Zach Gallin (Cornell), No. 17 John Sabia (Army) and No. 18 Mario Arce (St. Bonaventure). Hanegby already owns a victory against No. 14 Malcome Scatliffe, having eliminated the Penn State player in straight sets at the ITA event.

Binghamton opens its spring semester competition on January 31 at the Army Invitational.
