Adam Cohen

After earning his stripes with a nationally-prominent program at University of Minnesota for eight years, Adam Cohen begins his first year as head coach at Binghamton in 2006-07.

"We're pleased to bring on board someone with Adam's credentials," Athletics Director Joel Thirer said. "His experience with a nationally-ranked program at Minnesota is significant, and we are confident he will lead our men's tennis program with that same energy and dedication."

Cohen helped Minnesota reach the NCAA tournament seven times in eight years, including a trip to the Sweet 16 in 2000. Last spring, the Golden Gophers were ranked #35 in the country and advanced to the second round of the NCAA tournament. He played an instrumental role in that success by recruiting All-American and Big Ten Player of the Year Harsh Mankad, the school's first-ever tennis recruit from India. Cohen had direct oversight of Minnesota's recruiting efforts and individual and team practices.

"My nine years as an assistant have prepared me for this opportunity," Cohen said. "I'm confident in my skills and ability to continue the success of Binghamton tennis."

He initially crossed paths with Binghamton tennis back in 2003, when Minnesota defeated BU 4-0 in the first round of the NCAA Regional in Minneapolis.

Cohen starred for the Golden Gophers before graduating in 1997 with a bachelor of arts degree in history. He played his final two collegiate seasons at Minnesota, steering the program to back-to-back Big Ten titles in 1994 and 1995. Cohen transferred to Minnesota from Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville, where he went 23-1 in two seasons.

A native of Buffalo, Minn., Cohen has also been the Director of Tennis at the North Oaks Tennis Program for seven years. As head pro, he ran a junior program of 200+ as well as an adult program of more than 100 members.

Before joining Minnesota's coaching staff, Cohen served as assistant at University of Louisiana-Lafayette (1997-98), where he helped lead that program to a conference title.

"I'm happy to have the chance to be the next head coach at Binghamton," Cohen said. "This is a great tradition here and I'm excited to carry the torch into the future."

Adam and his wife, Sara, have a three-year-old son, William.
