Binghamton men's swimming suffers first loss of season at UMBC

BALTIMORE, Md.--Binghamton men's swimming won the opening 400 medley relay but host UMBC rolled to a 142-96 victory in a tri-meet Saturday at UMBC's Natatorium. The Bearcats defeated Seton Hall, 128-112, to improve to 4-1 on the season. The women's team (1-5) went 1-2 on the afternoon, defeating Millersville, 143-76, and losing to UMBC, 148-75, and Seton Hall, 176-66.

Freshman Kaan Tayla (Ankara, Turkey), sophomore David Holmes (Doncaster, England) and senior Robert Kaczynski (Tychy, Poland) won events and swam legs on the victorious medley relay. After winning his first seven collegiate events this fall, Tayla was defeated in the 200 free, finishing second to UMBC's Jakub Sroczynski. Tayla returned the favor in the 100 free, however, touching first in 46.39, ahead of Sroczynski. Holmes captured the 50 free in 21.57 and was runner-up in the 200 fly. Kaczynski captured the 200 breaststroke in 2:13.82 and was second in the 200 IM.

On the women's side, senior Huijue Cai (Shanghai, China) placed second in the 50 free, touching in 25.03. Sophomore diver Shelley Wax (Dix Hills, N.Y.) placed third on the one-meter board (165.65) and fourth on the three-meter board (149.30).

The Bearcats host New Hampshire at 11 a.m. on Sunday, November 14.
