Tayla named America East Men's Swimming Performer of the Week

VESTAL, N.Y.--Binghamton University sophomore Kaan Tayla (Ankara, Turkey) has been named the America East Men's Swimming Performer of the Week for November 15-21. This is the first time this season and the third time in his career he has received this honor.

Binghamton's Tayla met the NCAA B provisional mark with victories in both the 50 and 100 freestyle this past weekend at the Bucknell Invitational. In the 100 freestyle, Tayla’s time of 44.00 broke his school record of 44.46 which he set last season at the ECAC Championship. In the 50 freestyle his time of 20.18 was two hundredths of second behind his school record. He also swam the final leg of the 400 medley relay that was triumphant in 3:26.22, breaking the school record set at the America East Championship last season. In the 100 butterfly he finished second to teammate Trevor Stone with a time of 51.46.

"It is really impressive that Kaan got the two B cuts this week at the Bucknell Invitational," head coach Patrice Back said. "It is very early in the season for him to beat his best time in the 100 freestyle and to have almost beaten his best time in the 50 freestyle before our shave and taper is amazing. I think it builds confidence in him that he get the NCAA A cut by the end of the season. Getting recognized for his efforts this past weekend is exciting."

The Bearcats are off till November 30 when they travel to Cornell for a dual meet at 2:30 p.m.

NOTE: This marks the third consecutive week that a member of the Binghamton men's swimming team has received this award. David Holmes received the award the two prior weeks.
