Immediate Release: David O'Brian Contact: David O'Brian (sports@binghamton.edu) Phone: 607-777-6478 For Immediate Release: February 5, 2005 Men's and women's swimming splits with Stony Brook in final home meet of the season Complete Results VESTAL, N.Y.--Freshman Kaan Tayla (Ankara, Turkey) and seniors Robert Kaczynski (Tychy, Poland) and senior Huijue Cai (Shanghai, China) each won two individual events as the Binghamton swimming and diving teams split their final home meet of the season against Stony Brook. The men's team (9-3) defeated the Seawolves (5-4) 134-98 but the women's team (2-12) fell short against Stony Brook (8-2) 143-98. Tayla swept the 50 and 100-yard freestyle events with winning times of 21.27 and 46.73 respectively. Kaczynski took top honors in the 200 IM (1:59.15) and the 200 fly (1:53.31). Cai broke a pair of pool records in the women's 50 and 100-yard freestyle races. Her winning time of 24.47 in the 50 free eclipsed the mark of 24.63 set by Jamie Crowley of New Hampshire in 2003. In addition, the first-place time of 52.27 in the 100 surpassed Laura Linek's 2002 mark of 53:17. Cai is the current school-record holder in both events, with times of 23.64 and 50.77 respectively. The Bearcats are off next week before embarking on their biggest meet of the season, the America East Conference Championships, which will be held at UMBC Feb. 18-20. "Today was a great way to wrap up the regular season," head coach Patrice Back said. "We are tapering off good heading into the conference meet. Hopefully, this well be a preview of how we do in two weeks." |
