Sprang named assistant swimming coach

The Binghamton University swimming and diving program has hired Matt Sprang as its new assistant coach. He joins a staff that includes first-year head coach Patrice Back and diving coach Chris Zoltoski.

For the past five years, Sprang has been the head coach for the USA Swim Club's 14-Under Team. He has developed 30 age group all-stars, 10 nationally-ranked swimmers and won three regional team championships. During that same five-year period, he was also the Assistant Coordinator of Aquatics at the Gloucester County Institute of Technology in Sewell, N.J.

A 2000 magna cum laude graduate of Rowan University, Sprang was a NCAA Division III honorable mention All-American in the 100 backstroke. He also had the highest GPA out of all the male athletes in the Rowan Athletic Department.

"We are very excited to have Matt here," Back said. "He has a great background in both swimming and coaching and will bring new and innovative ideas that will take us to the next level."

"This is a great opportunity for me because I swam against Binghamton back before they moved up to Division I and they were always a strong program," Sprang said. "Coming from a club coaching background, I have coached every event, so I will have no hesitation to coach where I am needed at Binghamton."
