Binghamton sweeps Vermont and Niagara in opening tri-meet of the season

VESTAL, N.Y.--Binghamton had six double event winners as both the men's and women's swimming and diving teams swept a tri-meet with Niagara and Vermont. The men's team (2-0) beat Niagara 136-85 and Vermont 162-42 while the women's team (2-0) beat Niagara 165-65 and Vermont 146-96. Niagara beat Vermont 146-73 in the men's meet but lost in the women's meet 165-71.

"This was a great first meet for us," head coach Patrice Back said. "The men showed that they are a very versatile team because we were able to move a lot of people around into different events. The women were tough today because the meet was pretty close about halfway through. They did what they had to do to win."

On the men's side, senior Chris McGuire (Essex, England) won the 1000 free (10:00.93) and the 100 breast (1:00.99), junior Axel Hellstrom (Umea, Sweden) won the 200 IM (2:06.24) and the 500 free (5:04.66) while freshman Brian Koizim (White Plains, N.Y.) made the most of his first meet, capturing the 100 back (56.67) and the 200 free (1:50.34).

The women were led by senior Amy DeWitt (Mastic, N.Y.), who won the 200 IM (2:16.25) and the 100 back (1:02.11), senior Yun Qu (Hangzhou, China), who finished first in the 200 free (2:01.25) and the 100 fly (57.61) and junior Laura Linek (Canandaigua, N.Y.), who won the 50 and 100 free events with times of 25.13 and 54.13 respectively.

Both teams are off until Nov. 1, when they travel to Towson for a 1 p.m. meet.
