Men's
swimmers tally 50 points on first day of ECAC Championship, stand
in eighth place Women's swimmers record 27 points, stand 16th overall Complete Results Team Scores PITTSBURGH, Pa.--Members of the Binghamton men's and women's swim teams competed in the first day of competition at the ECAC Championship on Friday. The meet is being hosted by the University of Pittsburgh at Trees Pool. A full day of competition is on the slate for Saturday and Sunday, with competition starting both days at 10 a.m. On Friday, the men scored a total of 50 points and were in a tie for eighth place among 26 teams. The Bearcats received 40 points from its two relay teams in the 200 free relay and 400 medley relay. In the latter race, the quartet of junior Greg Bello (Rochester, N.Y.), sophomore Robert Kaczynski (Tychy, Poland), junior Chris McGuire (Essex, England) and freshman Daniel Holmberg (Oxford, N.Y.) touched in 3:30.25, good for sixth place and 26 team points. The 200 free relay, which substituted senior James Fahlbusch (Centerport, N.Y.) for Bello, finished 10th with a time of 1:26.64, garnering 14 points. Binghamton was just 1 1/2 seconds off a fourth-place time in the final heat. Individually, Holmberg placed 10th out of 16 swimmers in the 50 free with a time of 21.65, and senior Magnus Lofgren (Umea, Sweden) placed 14th in the 500 free, touching in 4:44.05. On the women's side, sophomore standout Huijue Cai (Shanghai, China) placed fourth in the 50 free with a time of 23.74. Cai, who had been just .01 seconds off the best time in the preliminaries, played a role in all 27 of the Bearcats points. Cai also anchored the 200 free relay quartet that placed 11th with a time of 1:40.48. Joining her on the relay were freshman Eden Payabayab (College Point, N.Y.), junior Gemma Bowsher (Portsmouth, England) and sophomore Hannah Clegg (Hampshire, England). The women stood in 16th place in the 26-team field.
