LEWISBURG, Pa.--Binghamton University sophomore Kaan
Tayla (Ankara, Turkey) won the 100 free in 44.00, meeting
the NCAA "B" provisional mark of 44.65 as members of
the Binghamton men's and women's swim teams competed in the final
day of competition at the Bucknell Invitational on Sunday in
the Kinney Natatorium. The men finished in fourth place with
741.5 points, behind James Madison (905), Old Dominion (840)
and Bucknell (790.5). While the women placed fourth as well with
422 points, behind James Madison (1246), Bucknell (991) and Old
Dominion (626).
"Overall we had a great competition," head coach Patrice
Back said. "The teams were extremely supportive of each
other. Everyone had high goal times to go after. It was a great
invitational for us. It makes us look forward to the conference
championship."
On the men's side Tayla's 100 free time broke his school record
of 44.46 which he set at the ECAC Championship last season. Finishing
right behind Tayla in the 100 free was junior David
Holmes (Doncaster, England) with a time of 45.51. Holmes
was triumphant in the 500 free (4:35.83). Freshman Brenno
Varanda (St. Petersburg, Fla.) finished second in the 200
breast in 2:08.11.
In
the 100 fly, junior Trevor
Stone (Windsor, N.Y.) was victorious (51.06), Tayla touched
second (51.46), junior Brian
Koizim (White Plains, N.Y.) placed seventh (53.70) and senior
Wade
Rimbach (Essex, England) finished eighth (53.72). In the
400 IM, Varanda touched second (4:04.04) while Rimbach placed
sixth (4:17.16). In the 200 back, Koizim finished fourth (1:55.77)
while freshman Sean Lorenz (Norwich, N.Y.) placed eighth (2:01.30).
On the three-meter board dive freshman Ryan
Graham (Vestal, N.Y.) finished second (262.10) while sophomore
Matthew
Russo (Manhattan, N.Y.) placed sixth (211.20).
The relay team of Tayla, Koizim, Stone and Holmes was triumphant
in the 400 free relay in 3:04.05.
On the women's side freshman Aleksandra
Grubic (Split, Croatia) finished second in the 100 free (53.20)
while senior Eden
Payabyab (College Point, N.Y.) placed eighth in the 100 fly
(1:00.86). In the three-meter board dive, freshman Katherine
Hassfurter (Horseheads, N.Y.) placed third (201.35) and junior
Shelley
Wax (Dix Hills, N.Y.) placed seventh (167.25).
The Bearcats are off till November 30 when they travel to Cornell
for a dual meet at 2:30 p.m. |
