Day
1 of America East Swimming & Diving Championships Complete
Binghamton men's swimmers in second place after first day of
competition; women stand in seventh place
Bearcats broke six records on the first day of the three-day
meet

East Day 1 Release
BALTIMORE, Md.--The Binghamton University men's and women's swimming
and diving teams won crowned four winners on the first day of
competition at the America East Championship on Friday at UMBC
Natatorium. The men's swimmers racked up 175 points and trailed
only defending champion UMBC (281). Binghamton was in front of
Stony Brook (169), Boston University (142 points), New Hampshire
(109) and Maine (87).
On the women's side, the Bearcats tallied 72 points and trailed
Northeastern (246), New Hampshire (195), UMBC (161), Maine (115),
Stony Brook (126) and Boston University (118). Binghamton was
ahead of Vermont (45).
Freshman Kaan
Tayla (Ankara, Turkey) set the conference and school
record in the 50 free (20.41) in the preliminaries, missing the
NCAA "B" cut by eight hundredths of a second. In the
finals he won the event in 20.72.
Binghamton's 200-yard free relay quartet of Wade
Rimbach (Essex, England), Trevor
Stone (Windsor, N.Y.), David
Holmes (Doncaster, England), Tayla touched in 1:24.98
to break the pool and team records. In the 400 medley relay Brian
Koizim (White Plains, N.Y.), Dylan
Hobe (New Windsor, N.Y.), Holmes, Tayla won in 3:26.33,
breaking the conference and school records.
On the women's side, senior Huijue
Cai (Shanghai, China) won the 50 free (23.98).
Day 2 of the three-day championship meet will begin with time
trials at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in the following events: 400 individual
medley, 100 fly, 200 free, 100 breast, 100 back and 3-meter diving
(women only). Finals in these events, as well as the 200 medley
relay and 800 free relay will begin at 6 p.m. A complete recap
of Saturday's action will be available by 10:30 p.m. Saturday.
