Men's soccer starts fast, defeats Stony Brook 2-0

STONY BROOK, N.Y.--Two goals within the first 7:02 of the game proved to be enough for the Binghamton men's soccer team (9-2-4, 3-1-2 AE) to beat Stony Brook (3-11-1, 1-5-0 AE) 2-0 in an America East Conference soccer game on Wednesday afternoon at University Field. With the win, Binghamton extends its unbeaten run to eight games, having gone 5-0-3 during that span. In addition, the Bearcats posted their 11th shutout of the season, which ties the school record set by the 1984 team and later equaled by the 1986 squad.

Sophomore back Graham Munro (Inverness, Scotland/ Invergordon) gave Binghamton the lead just 3:36 into the game on an unassisted goal. It was his third goal of the season. Just 3:26 later, freshman midfielder Joey Neilson (Boothwyn, Pa./ Strath Haven) extended the lead to 2-0 when he took a pass from junior forward Stephen Bruce (Buckie, Scotland/ Buckie Community) and netted his third goal of the season.

"We started off great," head coach Paul Marco said. "From there we had chances to extend the lead but Stony Brook kept fighting back. They were always trying to get back in the game."

Sophomore goalkeeper Stefan Gonet (Refrewshire, Scotland/ Trinity) made three saves on his way to posting his school-record 11th shutout of the season. That breaks the record of 10 shutouts, which was set by Adam Napell in 1987.

The Seawolves outshot the Bearcats 10-7 for the game, including an 8-4 deficit in the second half.

Binghamton returns home to face Maine on Saturday at 1 p.m.
