Gonet capped his brilliant season with career-high 10 saves in BU's 1-0 overtime loss to fourth-ranked St. Louis Wednesday in the NCAA second round. He still leads the entire nation in both goals against average (0.381) and shutouts (16), and earlier in the year went more than 893 minutes without allowing a goal. That shutout string is the second longest in NCAA Division I history. St. Louis head coach Dan Donigan had this to say about Gonet's performance against the high-powered Billikens. "I breathed a huge sigh of relief (when St. Louis scored). Their goalkeeper was incredible." Gonet has received several accolades thus far this season. He was named America East Goalkeeper of the Year, America East Rookie of the Year, and America East Championship Most Outstanding Player. He also has a good chance to earn all-region honors when that team is announced in early December. With Gonet anchoring the nation's top defense, Binghamton did not allowed an opponent to score a first-half goal all season long - the only team to claim that distinction. Other Binghamton athletes who have appeared in the Faces in the Crowd section are five-time track and field national champion Monique Hacker (1998) and golfing standout Adam Fuchs (2000). In addition, former men's basketball coach Dick Baldwin was the subject of a feature story in 1994. |
