Immediate Release: November 12, 2005 Contact: David O'Brian (dobrian@binghamton.edu) Phone: 607-777-6478 Binghamton men's soccer loses shootout to Stony Brook in America East Title Game Bearcats await NCAA selection possibility after second straight conference runner-up finish Box score STONY BROOK, N.Y.-- Host Stony Brook (12-4-4) won the decisive penalty kick shootout 4-2 to win the America East Conference men's soccer championship over third-seeded Binghamton (12-4-5) in the finals on Saturday night at Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium. The game was deadlocked 1-1 at the end of two sudden-death overtimes but the Bearcats came up on the short end of a shootout for the consecutive year in the championship game. Both teams converted their first two penalty kick attempts but in the third frame, junior midfielder Kyle Antos (Endicott, N.Y.) was stopped by Stony Brook goalkeeper E.J. Xikis. Yahaya Musa converted his shot in the bottom of the third frame to give the Seawolves a 3-2 lead. Xikis came up big again in the top of the fourth frame, stopping a shot by junior midfielder Ibrahim Yusuf (Spring Valley, N.Y.). Chris Scarpati then fired home the winning shot to give Stony Brook its first-ever America East Conference title. It was Antos who got Binghamton on the scoreboard at the 20:05 mark of the game. He scored a goal off a free kick from sophomore back Adam Chavez (Endicott, N.Y.) from 35 yards away. Antos got himself into position to head the ball into the right corner of the net for his third goal of the season. It was his second goal scored against Stony Brook this season. Binghamton was just 3:15 away from its first conference title since 2003 when the Seawolves rallied to deadlock the game. Chris Megaloudis got the tying goal from 18 yards away. The Bearcats had two chances to end the game in regulation but a pair of shots hit the post, forcing overtime for the fourth time in their last five games. Senior back Graham Munro (Inverness, Scotland), senior midfielder Danilo (Sao Paulo, Brazil) and junior forward Joey Neilson (Boothwyn, Pa.) were named to the America East Conference All-Tournament team. On Monday at 4 p.m., ESPN News will announce the pairings for the upcoming NCAA Tournament. After receiving an automatic bid in 2003 by virtue of its America East title, Binghamton was on the bubble for a bid last year but was left out of the 48-team field. |
