Immediate Release: October 19, 2005 VESTAL, N.Y. - As the team begins its own preparation for the upcoming season, the 2005-06 Binghamton University men's basketball team took time to share words of advice and encouragement to area youngsters during a visit to St. James Middle School on October 13. Head coach Al Walker's squad spoke to students in grades four through eight and then held an autograph session, much to the delight of the young fans. The players and coaches divided into different classrooms and took turns reading to the students before answering questions ranging from their favorite subjects in school to their daily routine and family life. "The most important ability you need to have is the ability to listen," associate head coach Lawrence Brenneman told the kids. Brenneman, an avid reader and former mathematics teacher, urged the students to read for enjoyment. "Learn how to read something you like and then you will become connected to the story," he said. "It's not important how fast you read but how much you comprehend. Reading can be fun and it will become an essential part of your life." It was the fifth year that the men's basketball team has initiated the reading program in area schools. |
