VESTAL, N.Y. - The Binghamton men's and women's basketball teams
will be taking part in Coaches vs. Cancer Weekend, a program
started by the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC)
as an effort to raise awareness in the fight against cancer.
At both the women's game on Saturday at 1 p.m. against Maine
and the men's game on Sunday at 1 p.m. against Maine, there will
be several fundraisers designed to raise money for the American
Cancer Society (ACS).
Started in 1993, Coaches vs. Cancer has raised more than $20
million to benefit the American Cancer Society's efforts in research,
advocacy, education and patient services. The program leverages
the strength and celebrity of the nation's basketball coaches
to reduce cancer risk though education programs and to raise
funds for the ACS.
This weekend, Binghamton fans can have their photo take with
Baxter the Bearcat for a $5.00 donation. They can also make a
pledge based on the number of points the Bearcats score at during
game. Kids can take a shot at a mini-hoop to win prizes for a
$1.00 donation. There also will be a 50/50 raffle at each game.
In addition, all fans can simply make a donation to ACS.
Other activities that will take place at the games will be a
free Body Mass Index (BMI) screening, a tobacco education/ lung
machine demonstration, physical activity and nutrition information,
a prostate cancer support group as well as general health information.
The Decker School of Nursing at Binghamton University will also
sponsor both the games this weekend.
