Rampey throws two-hitter; BU baseball splits a twinbill at Vermont
Senior pitcher tosses six hitless innings in game one

BURLINGTON, Vt. - Senior pitcher Jarrod Rampey (Rochester, N.Y.) flirted with perfect game until Vermont's Kyle Brault hit a single to lead off the bottom of the fifth inning in the first game leading Binghamton (19-13-1, 6-4 America East) to an 13-0 win and a doubleheader split at Vermont (8-25, 6-2 AE) Saturday afternoon at Centennial Field. The Catamounts won the second game 11-9.

In the first game Rampey was given 1-0 lead on a RBI double in the top of the first inning by junior second baseman Matt Simek (Vestal, N.Y.) scoring junior shortstop Justin Smucker (Bird-in-Hand, Pa.). That would be all the run support Rampey would need. The Bearcats then cushioned their lead plating five runs in the fourth, two in fifth and five more in the seventh. Rampey pitched a remarkable game, going all seven innings for the shutout, only allowing a pair of hits which came in the bottom of the fifth while striking out five and walking nobody.

Binghamton's number nine through four hitters went a combined 11-for-22 (.500) with seven runs scored and nine RBI in the first game. Freshman third baseman Kyle Klee (Rochester, N.Y.) and Smucker each went 3-for-4. Klee had a pair of RBI and runs scored, while Smucker touched the plate three times and knocked in an RBI. Junior first baseman Brendon Hitchcock (Laceyville, Pa.) went 2-for-5, including a double and batted in three. Junior designated hitter Jeff Wertepny (Des Plaines, Ill.) went 3-for-3 with a pair of runs scored. All of Binghamton's starting hitters reached base safely at least once.

In the second game Vermont's offense awoke, just outscoring the Bearcats 11-9. Junior catcher Pat Haughie (St. James, N.Y.) went 3-for-4, including a double. He also drove in three while Hitchcock went 3-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored. The Catamounts scored in four of eight innings to build the winning margin, including seven runs in the fourth.

Binghamton will next travel to Lemoyne on Wednesday for a 4 p.m. game.

NOTE: All of Binghamton's starting hitters reached base safely at least once in the first game.
