Binghamton baseball drops America East opener at Stony Brook 8-3
Seawolves snap 3-3 tie in seventh inning, limit BU to six hits

STONY BROOK, N.Y. - Stony Brook (8-15, 1-0 America East) broke a 3-3 deadlock with a two-out double in the seventh inning and the Seawolves plated three more runs in the eighth inning to defeat visiting Binghamton (10-9-1, 0-1 AE) 8-3 Friday afternoon at University Field. It was the conference opener for both teams and the first of a four-game set.

With the scored notted at 3-3, the Seawolves used a leadoff single, sacrifice and run-scoring double to take the lead for good. Stony Brook, which doubled BU's hit total (12-6) in the nine-inning game, added a three-run home run in the bottom of the eighth inning to complete the scoring.

Junior shortstop Justin Smucker (Bird-in-Hand, Pa.) was the only Bearcat with more than one hit. He went 2-for-4 with an RBI double.

Stony Brook scored three runs in the second inning, combining two singles with a walk and two passed balls. Binghamton rallied to tie the game with a run in the third and two more in the fourth inning, but the Bearcats managed just two hits over the final five innings. The heart of the batting order struggled in particular, as BU's 3-4-5 hitters went a combined 2-for-12 with eight strikeouts.

Sophomore pitcher Scott Diamond (Guelph, Ontario) absorbed the loss after allowing eight hits and two earned runs in seven innings. He is 3-3 this spring.

The teams are scheduled to play a doubleheader Saturday beginning at noon.
