5, Binghamton 0 In game one, Brian Robinson threw his second straight shutout for the Catamounts, throwing a one-hitter. Robinson struck out seven and walked two, allowing only a one-out single to Tony Berube (Vestal) in the fourth inning. Vermont opened the scoring in the first inning as Bobby Tewksbary led off with a walk, moved to third on an error and a passed ball then came home on Jason Careys sacrifice fly. After Nick Roberts doubled, Leif Ekelund added a two-run single in the fourth off losing pitcher Greg Sousa (Congers). Sousa went the distance for Binghamton, allowing six hits and only one earned run. He walked two and struck out four. In the second game, Jeff Barry singled in two runs in the first inning as Vermont jumped out to a 4-0 lead after two innings. Ekelund, who had five hits and three RBI on the day, was 3-for-4 with a double and a triple in the game. Jamie Merchant was the winning pitcher for Vermont, allowing three earned runs in six innings. Justin Bissonnette picked up the save. Binghamton scored a single run in the fifth inning. Shawn Collyer (Cortland) led off the inning with a double and advanced to second on a bunt single by Tyler McGonigal (Kendall). Matt Caputo (Pine Bush) then reached on a fielders choice to bring home Collyer. In the top of the sixth, Tim Collar (Groton) led off with a single and advanced to third on a double by senior outfielder Austin Walters (Liverpool). Collyer then grounded out to score Collar from third and one out later pinch-hitter David Lewin (North White Plains) singled to bring home Walters. For the game, Collar was 2-for-3. The teams will play another doubleheader on Sunday, with the first game beginning at noon. |
