Former Binghamton University baseball pitcher Jeff Montani (Liverpool, N.Y.) has been named the Appalachian League Rolaids Relief Man for June, the school learned today. Montani pitches for the Bluefield Orioles in the short-season rookie league, which is based in North Carolina. In the first month of the season, Montani recorded eight points with two saves and a 1-0 record. A pitcher receives three points for a save, two points for a relief win and minus-two points for a relief loss.
A 2001 draft choice of the Baltimore Orioles, Montani began his professional career in Bluefield last summer before an injury cut short his first season. Moved to the closer’s role for the 2002 campaign, Montani has responded with a league-best five saves for the Orioles, who sit atop the East Division with a 14-5 record. In his last outing Monday night, Montani pitched a scoreless ninth inning for his fifth save, striking out one batter. In three years at Binghamton, Montani won 15 games and posted a 3.63 earned run average. As a junior, he was selected first-team all-conference after leading Binghamton to 19 wins and a runner-up finish in the Division I New York State Baseball Conference. Montani struck out 73 batters in 80 innings, and won a team-high six games. His also fired a no-hitter against Lehigh University. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
