Gruber game-winning hit gives softball split with Syracuse

Kim Gruber Junior left fielder Kim Gruber (Vestal, N.Y.) launched a towering drive to the base of the right center field wall, scoring Melissa Lavin from second base with the winning run in BU's nine-inning 1-0 victory over visiting Syracuse, Wednesday at the East Gym Field. The extra-inning victory helped the Bearcats salvage a split against the Orangemen, who won the opener, 1-0.

Lavin opened the bottom of the ninth with a line drive single up the middle, and with one out, stole second. After clean-up hitter Alicia Bocek struck out for the second out, Gruber drilled an 0-1 pitch that glanced off the glove of the Syracuse center fielder as Lavin raced home with the winning run.

Freshman pitcher Michelle Weeks (Bunnell, Fla.) recorded her second straight shutout, going the distance and giving up three hits with five strikeouts.

In game one, Syracuse scored single runs in the fourth and fifth innings, and the Bearcats were held to three hits.

Binghamton is 6-16 heading into its home doubleheader Friday against Niagara University. The twinbill is set to begin at 11 a.m. from the East Gym Field.
