Binghamton University men’s basketball coach Al Walker has signed his third recruit for the 2002-03 season. On Thursday, the Bearcats received a national letter of intent from New Mexico scholastic player Giovanni Olomo. The 6-foot-9, 225-pound forward plays for Rio Grande High School in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He is a native of Cameroon who emigrated to the United States in August 2000.
“Giovanni is a terrific basketball player who is just scratching the surface of his talents,” Walker said. “At 6-9, he possesses magnificent athletic ability, and is developing the ball handling and shooting skills to become an outstanding collegiate forward. He will be a special part of the foundation of our Division I program.” Olomo, a 3.8 student who is interested in BU’s engineering program, averaged nine points and seven rebounds for Rio Grande last season — his first in this country. He helped the team finish 18-6, capture the regular-season district championship, and advance to the state regionals. Already in the past year, Olomo’s shoe size has gone from a 14 to 16, indicating he may not be done growing. Olomo and his cousin, Serge Angounou, who signed with Arizona State, played basketball and soccer for Rio Grande, drawing attention throughout Albuquerque as the “Cameroon Cousins.” Olomo has family in the Northeast, and was pursued relentlessly by BU’s staff. “Binghamton really did a great job recruiting him,” said Ron Garcia, Olomo’s high school coach. “They really put in the effort.” Assistant coach Lawrence Brenneman first identified Olomo at a summer AAU event in Kansas City. Olomo joins 6-foot-8 junior college player Jason Kearns (Miles City CC, Mt.) and 6-foot-3 freshman-to-be Keston Roberts (Mt. Zion Christian Academy, N.C.) as BU’s early signees. | ||||
