Men’s basketball falls to No. 25 Providence in front of 8,742
Playing an historic game against the 25th-ranked Providence Friars, BU witnessed first-hand the talent level of the Big East and one of the nation’s best teams, losing, 119-58. In front of 8,742 fans at the Providence Civic Center - the largest crowd to ever watch a BU sporting event - the Friars shot an improbable 81% in the first half, rolling to a 61-22 halftime lead. Featuring several likely NBA draft choices, including 7-foot-2 center Karim Shabazz, Providence backed that up with 57% accuracy over the final 20 minutes. For the Bearcats, freshman forward Gabriel Martin (Junction City, Kans.) collected 16 points, six rebounds and three steals, while sophomore forward Jeffrey St. Fort (Miami, Fla./Monsignor Pace) added 10 points and two steals.
Providence, which at 20-7 is virtually guaranteed a trip to "March Madness" in the NCAA Division I tournament, hit 14-of-21 shots from three-point range, and used its size advantage to limit the Bearcats to 24 rebounds.
